September 2006 Newsletter
Georgia Flyers
President’s Letter

Monthly Recap.  The month of August saw the Georgia Flyers actively involved in social events.  First, our Summer Dinner Dance had a good turnout, with 30 members and guests attending.  We also spent an exciting day in historic Kennesaw during a Lunch-Bunch fly-in to Cobb County’s McCollum airport (RYY). We had 7 aircraft fly in and a total of 26 people have lunch and spend the day sightseeing in Kennesaw, visiting the Civil War and Locomotive, and flying the Sim Train Advanced Flight Training Device Cirrus flight simulator.  All of our members and guests had a great afternoon of flying, socializing and sight-seeing, as did those of us arranging the details.

Trip News.  Unfortunately, we had to cancel the trip to Franklin, Pennsylvania after the great planning work by member Sam DiGiammarino.  I know we had a few disappointed members who were looking forward to that trip, but we had come to the confirmation date with too few members expressing an interest. I want to encourage you to sign up as early as possible for trips so that the trip captain can make the necessary arrangements to allow fellow members to enjoy the trips they are planning.

It is now time to get signed up for the Great Southeastern Air Tour, also hosted by member Sam G. and his committee.  This trip will feature airports in Tennessee, and is shaping up to be a great time.  The last three air tours have been well attended and enjoyed by our members and guests hosted by Sam. This will be our first air tour of Tennessee, so you’ll want to be sure to be there.  I have included the itinerary and registration form at the end of this newsletter. This was also sent to the membership by separate email. Please sign up for this and get your payment to Sam by September 5th so he can make the last minute arrangements.

Lunch-Bunch News.  The next Lunch-Bunch event is planned for Saturday, September 23rd in Spartenburg, SC (KSPA) from 11:00 - 2:00. More information will be coming out on that event from Sherri as the time nears.

Meeting News.   Our next get together and meeting will be at our on Sunday, October 22nd Meeting at the EAA hangar - Gwinnett County Airport.  This is an important meeting and I encourage all members to attend as we will hold elections for the 2007 flying year. We will also have a professional presentation by Sandy Thomas on this year’s Louisville, Kentucky, trip as well as recapping other events this year.

Elections.  It is that time of year ago. It’s amazing how time flies when we’re having so much fun.  So we all need to be thinking of who we want to carry our Georgia Flyers organization into the future. Elections are scheduled for the October 22nd meeting. All of the current committee members, except the programs committee chair, have graciously agreed to continue their service through 2007, if that is agreeable to the membership. I need at least one person to step up to assume the programs committee chairperson position. This position entails coordinating any programs we desire. There is a lot of help available from the membership. We want to get everyone involved. If there are others who would like to run for any of the chairperson positions, please let Jim Turner know as soon as possible. The positions are listed on the Georgia Flyers website.

Meet a Member.  This month, we are featuring members Thomas and Lesa Rader.

Thomas was born in Johnstown, PA, and grew up in Knoxville, TN, where he received a Naval ROTC scholarship and attended Penn State University.  After completing four years as a Naval Officer, he began technical recruiting in Raleigh, NC, and now manages a PeopleSoft Technical Recruiting Firm.  His other hobbies include rock climbing, beach volleyball, sailing, watching movies and stereophile listening.  Lesa was born and raised in Wheeling, WV, and attended West Virginia University.  A full-time “Mom”, she enjoys being with her family (the girls and Tom, of course), gardening, and usually, after the event, she enjoys most of the things Tom talks her into doing!  They will have been married for 14 years as of Christmas Eve this year!  They met when Lesa and her sister became lost near the engine room while visiting Tom’s assigned Naval warship for a Dependent’s Cruise.  They recently purchased a Mooney M20F and look forward to it being their magic carpet to whisk them and their two beautiful, little girls (Isabelle, 5, and Megan, 3) to new and exciting locations and hope to get more involved with Angel Flight!  Their new motto is “have plane, will travel!”  Keep the Blue side up!

Stay tuned next month, when Sam DiGiammarino and Brenda Lee will be the subjects of our next “Meet a Member” article. This will be a great time to become familiar with Sam and Brenda as they will be our hosts on the Tennessee Air Tour.
